How crypto is taxed in Maryland

Maryland follows Maryland's graduated state income tax. Crypto gains realized while you are a Maryland resident are taxed as income at the state level — with a top marginal rate of about 5.75%on top of federal capital gains tax. Maryland adds local county income taxes on top of the state rate.

Worked example: on a $10,000 long-term crypto gain, a Maryland resident could owe roughly $1,500 federally (15% long-term bracket) plus up to about $575 to Maryland at the top marginal rate — a combined ballpark of $2,075. Your real rate depends on your total income.

However it is taxed where you live, the federal rules are the same: the IRS treats crypto as property, every sell or swap is a taxable event, gains held one year or less are short-term (ordinary income) and gains held longer are long-term (0%, 15%, or 20%). Losses offset gains and up to $3,000 of ordinary income per year.
